ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL
So MUCH information & images, many I'd never seen before. A compendium indispensible in understanding how the story moved from novel to stage to screen. Production stills, various early script treatments in their entireties... including oddities such as Forry Ackerman's 1st Edition Dracula hardcover signed by everyone from Stoker to Lugosi to Chris Lee and WAY beyond. Unbelievable-- a true treasure.

Radical Man : The Process of Psycho-Social Development
Published in Paperback by Books on Demand (01 January, 1970)
Author: Charles Hampden-Turner
Average review score:

A turning point in my life
"Radical Man" has had more impact on my life than any other secular work. It taught me the value of nonconformity in a nation of sheep. Certain situations call for an independant act to counter the dictatorship of tradition or personal influence, power or popularity. Did you ever feel disappointed in yourself after letting a bully or a blowhard run roughshod over others? "Radical Man" authorized me to object, question, stand up, reject. Independance, I learned, is more than merely a democratic abstraction. The book taught me the importance of reaching out to others outside of my sphere of influence, of taking chances, of the value of vulnerability and how these experiences can teach me more about myself and others. I initially read this book as part of a class assignment in college. Since then I've tried to re-read it every decade or so and have bought extra copies to pass on to people of sufficient depth. That may sound elitest but it's not a simple read. Several graphs, no pictures and it's not easy to dance to. The message is:we can stand up when creepiness seems to be carrying the day. or

Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall (January, 1996)
Authors: Ronald C. Turner, Timothy A. Douglass, and Audrey J. Turner
Average review score:

Just Great!
If you not only want to learn SGML painlessly but also want to have a background on the subject, read this book. The author was careful to explain the important aspects of SGML in an easy to read way. When he presents the real code, you will notice how easy it is to read just because he has already explained it in an easy way. I recommend one chapter a day, every day. When you finish it, go back and read again, not in order, but specific parts that interest you.

Real Lessons of the Vietnam War: Reflections Twenty-Five Years After the Fall of Saigon
Published in Hardcover by Carolina Academic Press (February, 2002)
Authors: John Norton Moore, Robert F. Turner, and Kirk F. Blackard

The Cold, Hard, Facts of The War in Vietnam
Twenty-five years after the fall of Saigon, The Center For National Security Law of the University of Virginia Law School hosted a seminar designed to determine the "real" lessons of the Vietnam War. In doing so they assembled a distinguished team of twenty-one scholars, each an acknowledged expert in his field. The results were then compiled and published in this work. The conclusions reached included, but were not limited to the following:

Vietnam was a small "hot-spot" in a global "cold war" It was important because the great powers of the day chose to contest it, if for no other reason.

Ho Chi Minh was a dedicated agent of international Communism, not a Vietnamese Nationalist fighting for his people.

While the "Peace Movement" greatly aided the Communist efforts, they did not lose the war. Our flawed, "no-win" strategy did.

American forces were not given a free license to rape, kill, pillage and burn at will. Soldiers and Marines were indicted and vigorously prosecuted for war crimes in Vietnam.

Our involvement in Vietnam WAS necessary. Had we meekly capitulated when the Russian bear growled, we could not have remained credible as an ally.

The war was NOT unwinnable. In effect we DID win. Only Congress' refusal to provide the support promised our allies caused South Vietnam's capitulation and the subsequent blood bath that left millions dead.

The authors authenticate their findings with well-researched data. These facts will be contested by some and ridiculed by others. However, mere hype cannot refute their research. Facts are facts. The carefully prepared and skillfully perpetuated myths by some in government and many in the media cannot change them although they can be fully expected to try.

In the preface, editors Moore and Turner say that, "Obviously, this small volume is not intended to be the final word on the Vietnam War." Inevitably, more facts will emerge from such diverse places as Hanoi, Washington, Moscow and/or Beijing. However, until more facts emerge, this work is the most complete review of the conflict available. It deserves a place on the bookshelf of every serious student of the war for that reason.

Since Vietnam the world situation has changed completely. State sponsored terrorism has replaced Communism as our major threat. Knowing when and how to use force are more critical today than ever. Being too eager and too reluctant to use force when necessary are equal evils. This work provides valuable insights on the when and how of using force. It is an invaluable tool for today's national security planners for that reason.

I was privileged to attend the Conference that inspired this work and eagerly awaited publication of this book for two years. It was well worth the wait. I am much better informed for having read it. You will be as well.

Reclaiming the American West
Published in Hardcover by Princeton Architectural Press (01 November, 2002)
Authors: Alan Berger and Frederick Turner
Average review score:

Post Technological Landscape
This book is the first book I have read in the past 5 years that is so visually captivating I could not put it down. Berger uses his own gorgeous aerial and ground photographs, and visionary mapping techniques to show the world a new type of landscape that is being produced via landscape devastation and reclamation. He coins a new term -Post Technological Landscape-to describe the artificial landscapes being formed by humans in the post-mined areas of the western U.S. An introduction to the book, by the enigmatic poet Frederick Turner, also helps define this term. There is a very interesting,if not dry, appendix that reveals how each western state technically defines the term "reclamation" and what they have accomplished to clean up industrial leftovers in the landscape. I highly recommend this book for anyone thirsting for landscape photography, landscape theory, ecology and nature.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers (Bass)
Published in Paperback by Hal Leonard (01 December, 1999)
Author: Dale Turner
Average review score:

You Too Can Learn to Play Flea's Funky Bass Lines
Flea is certainly one of the innovative and renown bass players of the 1990s. Anyone who has seen Flea perform with the Red Hot Chili Peppers will certainly remember his distinctive jackhammer style of slap bass playing.

If you are a bass player and Flea is one of your major influences, then you're in luck. Do you want to play like Flea? Do you want to learn his funky bass lines and study his playing style? Then this book is for you!

This is the second release in the "Bass Signature Licks" series from the Hal Leonard Corporation. True to its title, the book provides a careful analysis of Flea's notable bass-playing style and technique. A total of 12 Red Hot Chili Peppers songs provide ample material. The song selections include classics from the Red Hot Chili Pepper's hit albums such as Mother's Milk, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and One Hot Minute. (It does not however cover any songs from the Chili Pepper's latest album Californication.)

Each song contains music notation, bass tablature, and a set of recorded CD tracks. An analysis of Flea's playing is also provided along with an explanation of his bass lines. The CD recreates Flea's bass lines (with accompaniment), so it is a valuable learning tool. It allows you to hear what the bass lines should sound like, and you can play along with the recordings for practice.

The book is interspersed with interesting facts, stories, and insights about Flea and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It makes for fun reading when you want to put your bass down and take a break.

This book is suitable for bass players of all skills. You will get out of it exactly what you put in. If you are willing to spend time "in the woodshed" studying and practicing the material in the book, you will definitely come out a better bass player. In addition to learning some cool Red Hot Chili Peppers songs, you can learn to play bass in the style of your influential hero!

The Reign of Richard Lionheart: Ruler of the Angevin Empire, 1189-1199 (The Medieval World)
Published in Hardcover by Longman (June, 2000)
Authors: Ralph V. Turner and Richard R. Heiser
Average review score:

Be Warned: This is administrative history, not a biography.
Most people don't find the dull records of administration to make for scintillating reading, but for those who already know a lot about Richard I and want a new perspective, this is an excellent study. It places Richard in a European-wide context in a way few studies have done before. However, it does not address (because it is not intended to address) some of the more fascinating aspects of Richard's career: The crusade, his personal life, etc.

landmark work
Victor Turner is one of the great names in anthropology and this is a classic work of analysis of social rituals. He takes van Gennep's theories on rites of passage to a new level, examining how different elements of festivals and rites function.
